The Challenge: A Big Leap Without a Bigger Meaning

Bukola came to me with an essay about taking a giant leap down a flight of stairs at age 17. It was a memorable physical feat, but on the page, the story fell flat.

What did jumping down those stairs reveal about her? Why did this particular memory matter now, as she prepared to apply to Cornell Business School?

The essay described what happened, but it didn't yet reveal who Bukola was, how she

thought, or why business school was her next big move.

The Discovery: Three Leaps, One Defining Story

Rather than rewriting Bukola's essay, I started asking questions.

I learned that Bukola was the daughter of African immigrants whose journey to America represented the first major leap in her family's story.

Then came Bukola's own academic leap: shifting from political science toward business and marketing.

But the most revealing discovery was still ahead.

Bukola had once envisioned law school. Now, she was pursuing an MBA. Why?

Through our conversations, we uncovered a transformative experience at Kellogg, the cereal company. There, Bukola discovered a fascination with branding, packaging, storytelling, and market segmentation. She wasn't simply exploring another career option. She was discovering the work that genuinely excited her.

Suddenly, the essay about jumping down the stairs had a much bigger purpose.

The Breakthrough: From Physical Courage to Personal Conviction

The leap at 17 was no longer the entire story. It became an early glimpse of a pattern that would define Bukola's life.

Her parents had taken a leap toward a new future. Bukola had taken a leap beyond her original academic path. Now, she was preparing for another: choosing an MBA over the law school ambitions she had once held.

The connectione exceeded bravery or willingness to take risks.

The true insight was that her biggest leaps were increasingly guided by self-knowledge, natural instincts, and the courage to pursue work aligned with who she was becoming.

We pivoted from an essay about a daring teenage moment to a story about family legacy, intellectual discovery, professional purpose, and personal transformation.

The Result: Cornell Business School

Bukola gained admission to Cornell Business School.

Her success illustrates something I teach every family: The most powerful college and graduate admissions essays are built around extraordinary insight.

Bukola already had the raw material. My role was to ask the questions that helped her recognize the deeper story connecting her past, her decisions, and her future.

The DREAM Lesson: Action alone is flat. Help your reader understand why it mattered, how it changed your thinking, and what you're prepared to do next.
